It looks like the Virginia State Police is going to step up and renew their investigation into four of the Colonial Parkway murders within their jurisdiction. This action is prompted from the FBI's recent vow to examine the evidence from the murders with the new and improved technology that is now available. Only time will tell if the investigations will resolve any of the many questions that have haunted the friends and families of those killed in the 1980s attacks. One thing is for certain: those answers won't come by doing nothing.
Four slayings are under the jurisdiction of the FBI. But, four cases that didn't occur within the FBI's jurisdiction are now being re-examined by the state of Virginia.
In October of 1989, the bodies of 18-year-old Annamaria Phelps and 21-year-old Daniel Lauer were found in New Kent County near a rest area on Interstate 64 between Williamsburg and Richmond. They were last seen alive between noon and 1:00 PM on September 5, 1989 at the rest stop for westbound Interstate 64 traffic. They were found less than a mile from the rest stop. Both Lauer and Phelps had been stabbed to death.
In September of 1987, the bodies of David Lee Knobling, 20, and Robin M. Edwards, 14, were discovered in the Ragged Island Wildlife Refuge. Robin Edwards and David Knobling were last seen on September 19, 1987. Knobling's truck had been found at near the foot of the James River bridge. Their bodies had washed up almost two miles away on the river's south shore.
The Virginia State Police will meet with the family of Annamaria Phelps on Wednesday (January 20) for the first time since the cases have received renewed interest by law enforcement. The family has also been meeting with the media in an effort to get their story out. The public's interest in these cases is vital in keeping these investigations going. Without the public, Justice for these victims would slip even further into the cracks of apathy and time.
