24-year-old Christopher Lance Helmlinger was last seen on September 27. That Sunday, after attending church, he had left his mother’s home in Berryville to walk to his grandmother’s home south of town, where he was living. He never showed up at his destination. His mother reported him missing a week later on October 4.
On this day in 1986, a long nightmare was just beginning. On that day, 23 years ago, the bodies 21-year-old Rebecca Ann Dowski and 27-year-old Cathleen Marian Thomas were discovered in the back seat of their car. The Honda Civic had been pushed down an embankment of the York River, off of the Colonial Parkway. To this day, those murders, and the six more that would follow, remain unsolved. The cases have been referred to over the years as the “Parkway Murders” or the “Peninsula Murders.”
Investigators have finally made an arrest in the murder of 28-year-old Cori Daye Desmond. CrimeShadows News first brought you the story of Desmond’s mysterious death on February 18. The young woman’s body had been found just two days earlier, wrapped in a bag and dumped in a ravine near a San Bernardino Mountain road. Her body had suffered blunt force trauma, but an exact cause of death has not been released.
I first wrote about the death of Eli Kevin Johnson on September 17, in a post entitled Grown Man Beats Three Year Old to Death. A day earlier, Eddie Valdez had beaten the poor baby to death. 24-year-old Tye Nicole “Nikki” Shafer (aka as Tye Nicole Johnson) and her boyfriend 23-year-old Eddie Everado Valdez were booked into the Oklahoma County Jail. Valdez was jailed on a child abuse complaint and Tye Nicole Johnson on a complaint of permitting child abuse.
