No matter how much I write about the monsters who terrorize children, it still rips my guts out every time I hear of a story like this one.
I first wrote about the death of Eli Kevin Johnson on September 17, in a post entitled Grown Man Beats Three Year Old to Death. A day earlier, Eddie Valdez had beaten the poor baby to death. 24-year-old Tye Nicole "Nikki" Shafer (aka as Tye Nicole Johnson) and her boyfriend 23-year-old Eddie Everado Valdez were booked into the Oklahoma County Jail. Valdez was jailed on a child abuse complaint and Tye Nicole Johnson on a complaint of permitting child abuse.
Yesterday (October 7), authorities charged Tye Nichole Shafer(Johnson) and Eddie Valdez with first degree murder. Eddie Valdez’s brother, 27-year-old Robert M. Valdez is also being charged, not with murder, but with child neglect and enabling child abuse. It seems that Robert had seen Eddie drop the child and didn’t try to help him or report the abuse.
Eli could still be alive today. He could be playing with other kids, learning to talk, or doing any of the things a three-year-old does. But, Eddie Valdez was a selfish, jealous, walking pile of demonic rage. And the evil deeds Eddie inflicted on Tye Shafer’s little boy weren’t a secret. Eli’s mother knew that Eddie beat the baby badly. Tye Nicole Shafer told police that around six months ago her beloved boyfriend Eddie had taken a toy baseball bat and beat little Eli’s feet until they were so bruised and swollen she had to take the baby to the hospital –only after returning to Oklahoma from Sherman, Texas. I think Eddie got off the hook on that incident. Nikki’s lying probably worked to that effect. Nikki claimed she left Eddie after this, but she drifted back to Eddie like a dog to his vomit. She said Eddie had bruised her kids on several occasions since she got back with him. Nikki says on her MySpace page that she was taught to "take up for my self and what i believe in!" If only she had stood up for her own children. if only she had stood up for Eli. But, she didn’t. So, now, Eli is dead. His two-year-old sister lost her brother, not to mention the terrifying memories and bruises of her own. The day before he murdered Eli, Eddie had hit Eli’s little sister, right there in Nikki’s own home, so badly that the little tot was bruised by his attacks.
Tye Nicole Shafer(Johnson) failed miserably at protecting her own kids. But, somehow, she still thought that she was capable of taking care of others. (From her MySpace:)
i love working with kids, expesialy autistic kids, i use to work at camelot were i worked with dissability kids like autism, that is my passion. my dream is to open up a daycare for dissability kids and regular kids, so they can be joined together so they can learn from each other, the dissability kids need the interation. besides that i love family time with my kids and boyfriend.the saying that keeps me going every day is never let anything get u down, if u fall off get right back up again. We know that family time with her kids and boyfriend was no less than Hell on Earth. But, Nikki says she loved it. Never let anything get you down. If Eddie knocks you down, just get right back up again –until you’re dead.
The following paragraphs are a snippet of the life of a child at the hands of a monster. You will learn exactly how Eli, only three years old, spent his last day on this earth.
Eddie admitted to beating Eli. Eddie Valdez used his fists on a baby boy. Imagine a child, a three-year-old, punched in the abdomen by a grown man –punched so many times that his life was just punched right out of him.
Little Eli had wet his pants. This is not an uncommon occurrence at three years old. I doubt that living with a fiendish child-abuser helped him to retain his continence, either. But, Eddie Valdez, ever the drama queen and hater of children, thought that this was a capital offense. He slapped the baby. He slapped Eli’s head, his arms, his legs. He slapped him repeatedly. There’s no telling what horrible words were screamed at the child during his physical torment.
So, after slapping the baby around, Eddie claims to have placed the little boy on the toilet and left the room. He probably went to whine to Nikki about how hard he has it with her children. He probably cried about not being able to see his own little boy. I imagine Eddie was quite the complainer.
Eddie then went back to check on Eli. But, Eli was not on the commode any more. The child was playing on the bathroom floor. The poor kid just endured a beating and Eddie was shocked that Eli had the nerve to sit on the floor and do the most terrible thing a child could do at the hands of Eddie Valdez. Eli played. Despite all of the shit he had to go through, Eli wanted to be happy.
Well, this was more than Eddie Valdez could stand. This was the ultimate. Eddie said that Eli’s playing on the floor enraged him so much that he "blacked out." Eddie said that he blacked out and just couldn’t remember exactly how many times he beat Eli. Eddie said that when he came out of his little episode, that he had Eli’s head stuck in the water of the toilet.
His mother must have been outraged herself. She had to have tried to remove Eddie from her home. She had to have called the police. I mean, after all, this was her baby –her own flesh and blood. But, no. No. No. This is not what happened.
Nikki did not try to help her son. Nikki had taken a Loritab. She was sitting in her apartment’s living room while a grown man, not the father of her child, not even her husband, was in the other room beating her little boy to death. She said that Eli was screaming and crying more than a normal "spanking" (I cant help but wonder what normal was in that house.) so she went to check on him. I don’t know why she bothered checking on him. Her checking on Eli was the equivalent of someone glaring at a car accident on the television. The viewer takes it all in, but stays removed from what is going on. Nikki said she went into the room and saw bumps and bruises on Eli. She said she told Eddie that he was going too far. She did not call the police. She did not call an ambulance. She did not pack up the kids and head for the hospital.
Instead, she just let Eddie carry on with his twisted discipline techniques. Forget about the CIA and their interrogations. Eddie Valdez could teach the CIA a few lessons.
After beating Eli so badly that he was now seriously injured –mortally wounded, he put Eli in "time-out." But this was no normal time-out for toddlers. Eli was forced to stand on the tips of his toes with his hands behind his back. But, the three-year-old was not cooperative. Little Eli hadn’t read any pirate novels where victims are terrorized as their ship is pillaged or watched movies where the prisoners of war are interrogated by villains who have no regard for the Geneva convention. He had no idea what was expected of him by this sinister Mengele wannabe. Eli was only three.
Eddie Valdez said that Eli wouldn’t do the time-out like he wanted him to. So, he put the little boy on the edge of the dining room table. Now, if Eli failed to cooperate, he would fall from the table onto the floor. But, Eli would not stand up. Eli defied Eddie. The kid was too smart to stand on the edge of a table. He thought he might fall. So, Eddie takes the child and holds him about four feet in the air –and drops him. He dropped Eli on the floor at least twice. So where was Nikki? Why was this torture not stopped?
Nikki just watched and waited as Eli’s condition worsened. She watched as Eddie continued to torment and abuse her own child. She watched as Eli vomited –not once– but three or four times. Eli began to grow pale. He started to get weak. This went on for hours. According to Nikki, it lasted about five hours. It was only after these desperate hours had passed that she decided to take Eli to the hospital. So Eddie and Nikki loaded up and took Eli to the hospital. Eli wasn’t taken in an ambulance. If hours don’t matter, then why would minutes? Eli died about twenty minutes after he reached the hospital. You can read the probable cause affidavit here (pdf).
The world failed Eli. His mother failed him. DHS failed him. Friends and family of Eli tried to help. They reported the abuse, even as early as year ago –according to one friend. But, DHS didn’t do anything to protect Eli. I guess they have their limitations. Nikki, Eli’s mother, was his only hope. Nikki chose her boyfriend instead of her child. She lied to protect Eddie back in October, when DHS was called because of Eli’s badly bruised behind.
Eddie Valdez vs. Eli. – A grown man against a three year old child in a fight to the death. Is it any surprise how this turned out?
