An Oklahoma City woman in her thirties found herself in the grips of a nightmare on September 17. The woman, a prostitute, had met two men the morning before. They had offered her a ride and a beer. The older man, 75-year-old Charles Knox Campbell, offered her $25 for sex. The woman wanted more money. The men became verbally abusive, so she left their company. The woman saw the younger man, 47-year-old Scott Wayne Campbell, the next day. Again, she agreed to go with him after he offered her beer. The man took her to the apartment he shared with his father.
After entering the apartment in the 2000 block of North Blackwelder, she was attacked. She was tied to a bed with rope and electrical cord. Her clothes were torn. She was choked and beaten in the face with a rolling pin. Scott Wayne Campbell told the woman "You’re never gonna leave here alive. We’re gonna tie you up, gang rape you and put you in the garbage."
Fortunately for the woman, a neighbor called the police upon hearing her screams. The officer entered the apartment and made his way to the father’s bedroom. Inside, he found the woman, bloodied, bound, beaten. The officer also discovered Scott Wayne
Campbell. He was trying to kill the woman by smothering her with a pillow.
The two men were arrested and placed in the Oklahoma County Jail on a $55,000 bond.
I’ve uncovered a little more information about these two degenerates. After perusing the numerous affidavits and charges it is a wonder to me how they were even able to be cruising the Oklahoma City streets for prostitutes.
Charles Knox Campbell, the patron thug, also known as Max Campbell and Jerald L. Smith, has a history of DUIs and drug-relat4d offenses dating back to at least March, 5 of 1981. On that date, over 28 years ago, he was arrested for transporting an open container along with a loaded gun. Fast forward to last January, when Campbell had to be extracted from his vehicle after he rolled it while driving drunk. Officers responding to a one-vehicle accident found the older Campbell in his pick-up truck, which was overturned in a ditch. Campbell was extremely combative with the paramedics. When asked about how much he had to drink, Campbell told the investigating officer "None of your f–king business!" And then, we have all of the arrests and other incidents in between.
Campbell has also lived in Fort Collins and Loveland Colorado. Before moving to Oklahoma City, Campbell and his odious offspring resided in Guthrie, Oklahoma. They caused quite a bit of trouble there, too.
Then we have Scott Wayne Campbell. Like father, like son, so they say. That certainly applies here. This rotten apple didn’t fall too far from the tree. He probably landed on his head. He’s also known as Russell Wayne Campbell and/or Wayne Russell Campbell –take your pick. Like his father, he has also lived in Fort Collins and Loveland Colorado, as well as Guthrie. They probably lived together in a sort of symbiotic/parasitic-type relationship.
The younger of the two thugs also has a long record of DUI’s and drug-related arrests. The earliest I could find was in 1988, though I have a feeling he started much earlier. Campbell also like to harass women over the phone. He has placed threatening and obscene phone calls to at least two different women in 2003 and 2004. The younger Campbell also has a criminal history in Larimer County, Colorado.
The most disturbing thing about this story is how it might have turned out had there been no call to the police. Scott Campbell was in the process of smothering the woman when the police officer arrived. What if the officer never showed? How come the younger Scott was so comfortable behaving like a homicidal killer in his father’s bedroom? If the neighbor heard the screams, you know the old man did. It is very hard not to think that this was their maiden adventure into this type of horror. I think it would be worthwhile to examine these two very closely in relation to other missing and murdered women in the areas and times these two have lived.
I hope they can keep these two scumbags locked up for a while. Like so many other wastes of oxygen, they really have no business running around loose.
I also hope that the victim of these two will turn her life around. Get off the booze and drugs. Get off the street. No one says it’s easy. But, the alternative is often an early death.
