Unsolved: What Happened to Sylvia Russell?
It’s been almost a year and we still need answers. Please, read this post and see if you can help.
Sylvia Ann Russell was 36 years old when her life ended mysteriously on Saturday, August 23, 2008. Sylvia was found unconscious a little after 3:00 AM, on the side of the road near 39th Avenue and Thomas Road in Phoenix, Arizona. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. She had been struck by a vehicle. However, the medical examiner could not determine this to be the cause of her death. Detectives told the family that there were strange markings (injuries) on her body. She was fully clothed. Her purse was found next to her, still containing her identification and money.
Sylvia was pregnant, and just one month away from her due date. The baby could not be saved.
Sylvia was an employee of Dillard’s department store at the Metrocenter Mall at Peoria Avenue and the I-17 Freeway. She worked in the cosmetics and fragrance and women’s apparel departments of the store. Sylvia lived about half a mile east of where she was found.
Sylvia did not own a vehicle. She often rode in taxi-cabs or shared rides with others. At other times she walked.
The last anyone heard from Sylvia was August 19. She had sent a text message to her teenage daughter saying she would be back in town Wednesday (August 20). Wednesday was her 36th birthday. Whether she left town or not is unknown. Her family said it wasn’t unusual for Sylvia to disappear for a few days and believed she was probably hanging out with friends and celebrating her birthday.
