On October 17, 1997, Norberto Rodriguez allegedly pointed a gun at his wife’s chest during an argument that stemmed from flowers that Norberto had received from another woman. He shot her in the hand with a .38 caliber handgun. He threatened to kill Irma Rodriguez and himself. The charges Rodriguez faced included attempted first-degree murder. Amazingly, he was acquitted of all the charges during a bench trial. Rodriguez even held on to his job with the Chicago Police Department, despite the fact that he shot his wife with his service weapon. He was finally terminated in December of 2008, over a year later. Irma filed for divorce Norberto Rodriguez in September of 2007. The rocky marriage had endured since October of 1994.
A neighbor witnessed Norberto Rodriguez arguing with Irma’s children on Sunday. Irma was not there. She was missing. Her purse was left in the house. This was not something Irma would do –and her children knew it. Her car was also gone, a a 2002 Pontiac Grand Am. The kids couldn’t reach their mother on her cell phone, which hasn’t been located. Irma’s family called the police about 10:30 Sunday night. They felt something was terribly wrong. Sadly, they were right.
Norberto and Irma were supposed to appear in court Tuesday morning at the Daley Center. That didn’t happen. Irma’s car was located at 148th Street and Kilpatrick Avenue in Midlothian on Monday night. Irma’s body was in the trunk. She had been shot several times, according to the autopsy.
Police have no suspects and no one has been arrested.
As police search for evidence, including the murder weapon, we sincerely hope that Justice will be served –and soon.
