Kenneth Michael Wilcox, 41, was indicted by a federal grand jury yesterday on three counts of kidnapping. The federal charges were due to his taking three children across state lines, from Texas into Oklahoma. The indictment does indicate that the victims were minors. Wilcox will face additional charges in Texas, where he is currently charged with aggravated kidnapping. The Lubbock Police Department is still investigating Wilcox. Wilcox is in the Lubbock County jail on a $750,000 bond.
If convicted on the federal charges, Wilcox could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a $750,000 fine.
Wilcox had been given permission by the parents of the children to take them to Six Flags. Unaware that Wilcox had been fantasizing about their daughter, the parents became worried when he failed to return when promised. Wilcox had taken the children into Oklahoma, very far from the Arlington, Texas amusement park. During the days Wilcox had custody of the children, they were hardly fed or cared for. The kids even had to sleep in the woods. Wilcox left two of the children at the home of his cousin, who was surprised to discover them when he arrived home from work. Wilcox was found with the other young girl near Shinewell, Oklahoma. He was transported back to Lubbock, Texas and put in jail. The children were returned safely to their parents.
During the ordeal, the State of Texas refused to issue an Amber Alert because of a technicality. The Lubbock Police Department took action and brought the plight of these children to the public’s attention. They should be commended.
