David Steeves Got What He Wanted
David Steeves, 43, is a plumber from Long Island. He confessed a disturbing secret to his wife five years ago. David was a homosexual. His 41 year-old wife, Maureen Steeves, wanted a divorce. Instead, she thought of her two boys and somehow managed to hold their catastrophic marriage together for their sake. Their continued relationship proved tenuous, and the couple eventually found themselves living apart. A woman married to a man who longs for other men just isn’t the formula for a happy marriage. Still, Maureen would come over to her estranged husband’s house, where her children lived, to cook meals and care for them. Two weeks ago, Maureen had moved into an apartment. She didn’t want David to know where her new home was. She was finally going to get a divorce.
On October 18, Maureen had visited the Center Moriches home of her soon-to-be ex-husband. She was cooking in the kitchen. David left to go to the store. Upon his return, he found smoke in the house. The food that Maureen had been cooking was burning on the stove. Maureen Steeves was unconscious on the floor and foaming at the mouth. David called 911. Maureen was taken to the hospital.
The hospital worked to find out what had happened to cause Maureen to collapse. As doctors examined Maureen and ran tests, her husband decided this would be a good time to leave town. On October 24, Steeves got on a plane at Kennedy Airport with the couple’s two kids, 16 and 14. They traveled to Manchester, England and then Orlando, Florida. This was not normal behavior for a husband, even one who was in the process of a divorce. Steeves returned October 28, nine days after his wife fell into a coma on his kitchen floor. He told police he would be returning soon. The police knew he was lying. He had already booked a flight back to England. He was soon arrested for attempted murder.
Maureen Steeves has been brain dead since October 18, the day she was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. On October 31 at 2 PM, she was removed from a ventilator. The charges against David Steeves will most likely be upgraded this week.
Prior to the day Maureen Steeves fell to the floor, David Steeves had been doing some research. He wanted to know about cyanide. He wanted to know if cyanide would show up in an autopsy. He wanted to know where he could purchase the poison online. He found out a few things –and he ordered some of the poison. He purchased two different kinds of cyanide and had them shipped to his home. He had a problem to solve and a plan to solve it. Although David himself wanted to be with men, he just couldn’t stand the thought of his wife with any man but him. On the day that effectually ended the life of Maureen Steeves, David Steeves had put the powdered poison he had ordered into his wife’s coffee. He killed her.
Medical tests detected the cyanide in the body of Maureen Steeves. The computer that police confiscated from Steeve’s home showed the evidence of his research and planning. Steeve’s strange behavior after his wife’s collapse was certainly cause for suspicion. He even had the motive. David did not want Maureen to be with another man. That’s what he told police when he confessed. Now, she’s dead. Steeve’s children have no mother. The two children are in the custody of social services. Soon, their father may be in prison. Despite his earlier confession, David Steeve’s pled not guilty to trying to kill his wife. Steeve’s lawyer says that he was innocent and that his confession was coerced. He will soon face charges of murder, since his attempt proved successful.
Maureen Steeves worked hard to care for her family. She faced an enormous amount of stress, but her love for her children, and even the man that killed her, was evident in her actions. For David Steeves, this was not enough. He wanted more. He wanted her to remain with him, despite his disastrous revelation. Freedom for his wife was more than he could stand. If Maureen Steeves was not going to stay with him, he wanted her dead. David Steeves got what he wanted.
