Jerrold Ecklind: The Doctor is In… Jail!
On October 6, Jerrold Randall Ecklind, an Ormond Beach geriatric doctor, was found guilty of improper exhibition of a weapon, which is a misdemeanor. The conviction stemmed from an incident where Ecklind had interrupted an altercation between a prostitute and a man. The prostitute was found in his car. Ecklind had admitted to police that he intended to trade sex for giving the woman a ride, however, the jury was not allowed to hear about this by the judge. He thought it might be predjudicial against Ecklind. He was sentenced to one year of year probation. He also gets to spend thirty days in the hole.
Ecklind still has to face charges of driving under the influence and possession of a controlled substance. These charges happened in July, months after his earlier arrest. Police found Xanax and morphine in his possession, hidden in a flashlight holder and a glass case, respectively.
Will these charges and convictions affect the medical license status of Dr. Ecklind? Since April of this year, when the strange behavior first began, it hasn’t appeared to make much of a difference. His license, which is up for renewal in March of 2010, still shows a clear and active status with no disciplinary action on file. As of this writing, no criminal offenses have been reported to the Florida Department of Health. It is up to the Doctor, himself, to make these reports. The FDH website states: "The practitioner did not provide this mandatory information." Unless Ecklind reports the charges himself, it appears that FDH won’t record this conviction until a review is performed following his renewal.
