Eugene Bennett – A Twisted Triangle

In September of 2006, I wrote a post entitled “The Strange Case of Eugene Bennett.” I told readers about this strange former F.B.I. agent and his hatred for homosexuals. I wrote about how he abducted and attacked his own wife (also an F.B.I. agent) and a pastor of a church, including his unwitting involvement of a young investigator. Bennett’s story reeked of weirdness from all angles. In my own mind, I wondered if Bennett might have been involved in things even more sinister, but as yet, unrevealed. This is a man I want very much to learn more about. I, and others interested will soon get the chance.

In May of 2008, author Caitlin Rother‘s new book, “TWISTED TRIANGLE: A Famous Crime Writer, a Lesbian Love Affair, and the FBI Husband’s Violent Revenge” will hit the shelves. I first heard of Caitlin Rother when she left some contact information on CrimeShadows News while researching this very book. I have been waiting in anticipation ever since.

Caitlin Rother, a former investigative reporter for The San Diego Union-Tribune and Pulitzer Award nominee, has written the first complete account of the events that led up to that momentous night in 1996. The book covers the affair between Bennett’s wife Margo and crime author Patricia Cornwell. Margo and Eugene’s troubled careers with the F.B.I. and the abduction and attempted murder are detailed in the book, as well.

Margo Bennett currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she is a captain in the University of California, Berkeley campus police department. Eugene (Gene) Bennett is incarcerated in Virginia, not far from the Washington DC area, where most of the events of this incredible story took place.

Eugene Bennett is scheduled for release in July of 2017.

Following are some reviews of “TWISTED TRIANGLE: A Famous Crime Writer, a Lesbian Love Affair, and the FBI Husband’s Violent Revenge” by Caitlin Rother

“[Rother] has been able to tell a story that will reach those who need to hear that such pain can be endured and such terror can be overcome, that survival and even triumph over adversity are entirely possible.”
—From the Introduction by Margo Bennett

“A harrowing tale of one woman’s struggle to maintain a balance between being a mother, a FBI agent, and dealing with a corrupt husband also an FBI Agent. A must read.”
—Joseph D. Pistone aka Donnie Brasco

“This book will haunt you. It will move you to look at some of the harsh realities of life in a new way. A powerful story–and masterfully written.”
—Aphrodite Jones, best-selling author, All She Wanted and Cruel Sacrifice

Im related to Gene. i'm sure he would be just thrilled you wrote a book about his story as he's sitting in his cell now, doing his life sentence in there……. nice of you.

Why don't you send him a copy? I'm sure he'd appreciate a good read. I know I did.

Hi I was digging for reliable information on consumables for large format printers. Your site was listed on Bing in this category, you have an informative site.

Caitlin – I’m gathering your intent was to tell a slanted story based on what is listed above as an “Introduction by Margo Bennett”. “A harrowing tale…” give me a break. Margo was no walflower! Chris – I don’t know what your interest is in this case..strange. Maybe someone should write a book about “how far can you push someone til they crack”. rnBTW Caitlin, I haven’t read your book (never intend to) but I’ve been told that you spelled my name wrong in it.rnrnWhitney – I’ve been searching for Gene’s girls on the internet. I just wanted to know how they were doing and how their dad was (if they are speaking to him). I have good memories of him and the girls and I have some pictures I’d love to share with them.

Caitlin – It appears your intent was to write a slanted version of the truth based on the fact that, from what is stated above, your book provides an “Introduction by Margo Bennett”. “A harrowing tale”?? PLEASE! For anyone who is interested in this story, it’s a great example of how not to believe everything you read. Margo was no walflower (sp?). BTW, I have no intention of reading your book however I have been told that you spelled my name wrong in it.rnrnChris – perhaps you should solicit someone to write a book: “how far can someone be pushed til they crack”. People have to take responsiblity for the part they play in life.rnrnWhitney – I’ve thought about Gene and his girls for many years. I’ve tried to find the girls thru the internet with no luck. I wanted to know how they are, if they are healthy and happy. Please tell them that “someone that loves them” was asking about them and their dad and that I think of them often. I have pictures I’d love to send them. If you communicate with Gene please tell him that I have been praying for him and the girls all these years and that I hope he has been spending his “time” healing and getting well. I created a email if you or the girls want to email me: noname1926@hotmail.com. God Bless!rn

Caitlin – I see by the info above (“Introduction by Margo Bennett”) that your intent was to write a slanted version of the events. BTW, I have no intention of reading your fiction but I have been told you spelled my name wrong in it.rnrnChris – maybe you could research someone who could investigate this story and write a sort of reverse story like “how far can someone push til you crack”rnrnWhitney – I’ve thought about Gene and his girls over the years. I’ve tried to find the girls on the internet with no luck. If you communicate with Gene, please let him know that someone is praying for him and hoping that during his ‘time’ he is healing. Please tell the girls that someone who loves them has been praying for them and hopes they are healthy and happy. I have fond memories of Gene and the girls and I’d love to send the girls pictures I have of them. I set up an email if you want to contact me: noname1926@live.com. Best wishes and God Bless!

Eugene Bennett was a big boy. People get “pushed” all the time. It’s called “life.” Sometimes life is rough. That doesn’t give you a license to do the things Eugene Bennett did. This was no spur of the moment crime of passion. It was planned and premeditated. The choices he made were his own. They were bad choices. Things could have gone much, much worse. Now he’s paying the price for his actions. I know that’s hard for some to accept, but that’s just too bad. Isn’t it?

I’m not disputing what you say. He has to pay for the crimes he committed. My point was that Margo is not without blame. Unfortunately life isn’t fair and some people “pay the price” for their “bad choices” and others don’t. rnrnI don’t know what truely happened; no one does except the two of them (not even you or Caitlin). I only know the things I experienced. rnrnQuestion for you: above you said “and his hatred of homosexuals”. Where did you get that from? Did he tell you? Is it in some court transcripts? I’m curious if that is your interpretation or if it is without a doubt something he actually said.rnrnThanks for discussion. I’ve actually never posted anything on line before. I try to stay away for jibber jabber.

People are free to make their own judgments, but what is right in the eyes of the law is what I am interested in the most.nnIn answer to your question: It is no secret that Eugene Bennett’s issues with homosexuality played a large part in his reaction to his wife’s affair. Was it “hatred?” I think so. That’s why I used the term.
