HBO Documentary

Oscar® Winner Alex Gibney Directs And Produces

From the row houses of Milwaukee through the bare ruined choirs of Ireland's churches, all the way to the highest office of the Vatican, it was an international and systematic conspiracy to silence victims of sexual abuse. MEA MAXIMA CULPA: SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD, directed by Alex Gibney (HBO's Oscar®-winning "Taxi to the Dark Side"), shows the face of evil that lurks behind the smiles and denials of authority figures and institutions who believe that they can do no wrong, because they stand for good.

The shocking documentary debuts MONDAY, FEB. 4 (9:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.

Other HBO playdates: Feb. 4 (4:05 a.m.), 7 (10:30 a.m.), 9 (4:00 p.m.), 15 (6:15 p.m.), 19 (1:00 p.m., 11:00 p.m.) and 24 (noon)
HBO2 playdates: Feb. 6 (8:00 p.m.), 11 (4:00 p.m.), 17 (8:15 a.m.) and 22 (6:00 p.m.)

MEA MAXIMA CULPA: SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD investigates the secret crimes of Father Lawrence Murphy, a charismatic Milwaukee priest who abused more than 200 Deaf children in a school under his control. The film documents the first known public protest against clerical sex abuse in the U.S., which led to a case that spanned three decades and ultimately resulted in a lawsuit against the pontiff himself. The investigation helped uncover documents from the secret Vatican archives that show the Pope, who must operate within the mysterious rules of the Roman Curia, as both responsible and helpless in the face of evil.

At the heart of the film is a small group of heroes – Terry Kohut, Gary Smith, Arthur Budzinksi and Bob Bolger. These courageous Deaf men set out to expose the priest who had abused them and sought to protect other children, making their voices heard. Gibney uses the voices of actors Chris Cooper, Ethan Hawke, Jamey Sheridan and John Slattery to tell the stories of men abused by Murphy. However, it is the faces and expressions of the courageous Deaf men that illustrate the indelible effect Murphy continues to have on their lives.

In addition to the Murphy case, MEA MAXIMA CULPA: SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD spotlights similar sex abuse cases in Ireland and Italy, and highlights the horrific actions of Marcial Maciel Degollado, a prominent church fundraiser and ruthless sex criminal beloved by Pope John Paul II. The film also reveals that in 2001, Cardinal Ratzinger – now His Holiness, Benedict the 16th – ordered that every sex abuse case involving a minor come through his desk, essentially establishing him as the most knowledgeable person in the world regarding priestly sexual abuse of minors.

Christopher J. Easley Broke a Baby

Easely31-year-old Christopher J. Easley of Marlow, Oklahoma allegedly put a baby in the hospital. According to the Lawton-Constitution, Easley confessed to breaking the infant’s upper and lower left arm, left femur and three ribs. Easley also confessed to using his closed fist to push the baby's stomach and ribs "to help with constipation." WTF? Easley also allegedly spanked the 2-month-old child for "disciplinary reasons."

Easley is being held on a $500,000 bond. He is charged with child abuse by injury after former conviction of a felony. He faces life in prison, which I doubt he will serve. Children often get the short end of the stick when it comes to monsters like Easley. At the very least, I hope someone wipes that smirk off his face.

Full story (including more details of the abuse) at the Lawton Constitution.

Blogger’s Right to Freedom of Speech Threatened

ConstitutionThe truth can be ugly, but the truth should never be hidden. This is especially true in the case of rape.

Throughout my years as a crime blogger, families of rapists and child molesters have begged me to remove articles. I have been threatened with lawsuits. I have been slandered and ridiculed. But through it all, I have stood my ground and asserted my constitutional rights. Others I know who have chosen to write about the things I write about have endured the same.

But recently, a most shocking story has emerged about a blogger who is actually being sued for posting about a rape.

Alexandria Goddard of has had a lawsuit filed against her for "defamatory" remarks. The trouble is, Goddard is telling the truth and has evidence to back up her claims. All writers -be they bloggers or journalists, should be concerned about this case. I sincerely hope that Justice prevails and Goddard's right to free speech is sustained. More importantly, is that the voice of victims, either directly or through bloggers like Goddard, is never silenced.

You can read more about this story from where I first heard about it, at SickCrimes. Beware, there is a lot more to this story and the victim in this case has been further victimized by online cowards. Meanwhile, Goddard has had two Twitter accounts shut down because she decided to tell the truth. There is so much wrong with this story, I can only hope that the truth rings louder than the lies.

William Todd Lewallen – Doped-Up Daddy

LewallenTulsa, OK: William Todd Lewallen's neighbor heard crying around 6:00 PM Sunday night. When he checked to see what the fuss was about, he found a 4-year-old child in Lewallen's back yard. The child was naked while the temperature was in the 40s.

When the police arrived, they discovered an 18-month-old girl locked in a dog kennel and covered in feces. The officers kicked the door down to get to the baby. Lewallen was passed out in a bed with another naked child next to him. No crying, screaming, or kicking had awoken him.

Lewallen aka "Toad," claimed he had taken narcotic pain medicine, a muscle relaxant and an anti-seizure medication and drank "a" beer before falling asleep.

The three children are now in Oklahoma state custody. Lewallen was arrested on a felony child neglect complaint. Lewallen is being held on a $50,000 bond. His next court date is set for November 19, 2012. Lewallen was convicted in the past of grand larceny, escape from a penal institution, second degree burglary, joyriding, public drunkenness, and making meth. He has also been convicted of other miscellaneous drug and alcohol-related charges in the past.

No mention of where the children's mother was or is.
